Born
1938 Portsmouth
Mary Stork studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol under
Frank Auerbach and later at the Slade under Keith Vaughan. As a student
her work featured in the Arts Council, Young Contemporaries Touring
Exhibition 1959 and with the London Group. She has lived in Cornwall
since 1960, chiefly in the St. Just area. She is an ex-member of the
Newlyn Society and has had one man shows at the Newlyn Gallery and
the Royal West of England Academy and has featured in the mixed exhibitions
at the Sail Loft Gallery St. Ives, the Sheviok Gallery and the Penwith.
During the ten years, from 1970 -1980, she stopped painting to bring
up her family. She is now showing regularly at the New Craftsman and
the Salthouse Gallery.
Mary Stork's style is rooted in the very best traditions of classical
draughtsmanship. An unfaltering, confident line conveys a very immediate
response to her sumptuous figurative subjects. She works "completely
intuitively and instinctively" with a raw energy and innate spirituality
that extends into her landscape painting.
